Community Days in Grades 6-12
The 2022-23 school year brings a new tradition to Laurel School: Community Days. Community Days are for Grades 6-12 and aim to strengthen community within our building, work to make an impact on the various communities in which we belong and help individuals to feel a sense of purpose when leaving. Each community day includes service, gratitude and a sense of spirit. The second Community Day took place on November 8 and focused on our "local" community. The day centered around being in the moment and giving back, whether it was through service or being a part of a team.
Jeanine Carroll, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeastern Ohio came to speak to the students and help them prepare breakfast and lunch bags for families and paint Kindness Rocks. Ronald McDonald Charities gives families a welcoming place to stay so they can focus on caring for their children along with programs in four Cleveland-area hospitals that offer a space for families to rest and recharge just steps from their child’s treatment room. Ms. Carroll shared gracious notes from parents who recently received breakfast bags so the students could feel more of a connection with what they were doing.
Together our students put together 500 meal bags and painted 350 Kindness Rocks. The students were enthusiastic about the service project and they all seemed to embrace the Ronald McDonald House ideals; providing comfort, care and kindness when it matters most.
Savannah Hameed ’24 greatly enjoyed her experience, “I had so much fun making snack bags with my friends during community day for the parents and children at the local Ronald McDonald House. Serving my community is a big part of who I am, and a huge hobby of mine. Being able to make people feel happy, joyful, and have hope is what community outreach is all about!”
Community days are a fantastic way to join together as students, faculty and staff to show gratitude for what we have and give back to our community.
