Dr. Rachel Herlein

Associate Head of School
Dr. Herlein brings nearly three decades of education experience to Laurel having spent 21 of those years as a leader in all-girls schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College, a master’s from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate in education from Northeastern University where her studies concentrated on organizational change management.

Before coming to Laurel, Dr. Herlein served for seven years as the academic dean and dean of faculty at Holton-Arms, a girls’ school (Grades 3-12) in Bethesda, MD. Prior to Holton-Arms, she held several positions, including English teacher, theater director, director of academic development and residential life leader at Garrison Forest School, a K-12 boarding and day school in Owings Mills, MD. She also taught elementary school and English in the Baltimore County Public Schools. She has spoken at a number of professional conferences and symposiums about the ways schools can live their missions through effective professional learning, intentional curricular design and a systems approach to effecting change.
