Laurel’s JustWrite Team Wins Grand Champion Award at State Tournament

Congratulations to Laurel's JustWrite team, a Grades 9-12 interscholastic competitive writing team, who won the Grand Champion Award at the Ohio State Tournament! Each of Laurel's 20 writers qualified individually at the Regional tournament last December and won a variety of awards at States. 

The 11th-12th Grade team came in 1st place and the 9th-10th Grade team in 4th place. Individually, Claire Sheeler '25 came in 11th place, Eliana Fieldman '27 came in 8th, Karma Abboud '24 came in 4th and Shaliz Bazldjoo '24 came in 1st place! 

In addition, Claire won a Director's Choice Award for a story she wrote at the Regional Tournament. Only three of these awards are handed out each year. For the second year in a row, Shaliz took home the Excellence in Poetry award, something only one person in the state is awarded each year.

Also qualifying for the State Tournament but unable to compete were Hazel Segal ‘27 and Madie Malbasa ‘24. And, a special shoutout to team alternates, Cora Gross ‘27 and Chandler Haynes ‘27, who accompanied the team and volunteered at the tournament.
